Apple Changed CEOs — and Nobody Blinked

The world's smoothest change of command — and the question it leaves for founders who are still indispensable to their own companies.

On September 9, Apple took the stage to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and its first foldable. But the biggest news of the event wasn't a product. It was who was running the show: John Ternus, the third CEO in the company's recent history, in his first launch since succeeding Tim Cook on September 1.

And the market didn't blink. Same stage, same standard, same company.

It's worth remembering what people said during the last transition. When Tim Cook took over, the consensus was that Apple would die without Steve Jobs — that the company was him. It didn't die. It became the most valuable company in the world. Now the reins have changed hands again, and the machine moves on as if nothing happened.

That's not luck. It's the result of a choice few leaders have the courage to make: building culture and systems instead of dependency.

Now bring the question to your own desk. If you stepped away from your company for 30 days, what would happen? If the answer is "it slows down" — or worse, "it stops" — you haven't built a company. You've built an operation that needs you every single day to exist.

The difference between those two outcomes is never the tool, the plan, or the market. It's the pattern of the person leading. A leader who centralizes every decision builds dependency — and dependency has a ceiling. A leader who builds clear decision criteria, a culture that can make decisions, and systems that hold the standard builds a company that grows around them, not one that depends on them.

That's what Apple's stage just showed us: a company designed so that a change of command — twice in a row — becomes an operational footnote.

Few founders ever get close to that level of design. Not for lack of capability — but for lack of work at the right layer: their own pattern.

If your company still depends on you to profit or grow, that's exactly the work I do with founders and CEOs. Whenever it makes sense for you, schedule a conversation.
